Our walk today takes us past the Parish Church through Rothay park on to the road known as Under Loughrigg. Walk the road a short way before turning off at an old pack horse bridge (Pelter Bridge) and climb gently until you reach Rydal Water. Whilst at Rydal Water there are some caves which are quite atmospheric. The path follows the water and after a short road walk you reach the village of Grasmere. Best known today for Wordsworth & Grasmere Gingerbread - just follow your nose to find the shop.
After a lunch stop in Grasmere leave the village passing Dove Cottage home of Wordsworth and follow the old coffin route back towards Rydal passing the Hall. This path takes you high on the fell side on the opposite side of the valley to this mornings’ walk so you can look back on where you have been earlier. Carry on back towards Ambleside taking a railed track between the fields which host Ambleside Sports and back to Brathay Lodge.
