Finsthwaite Tower
Finsthwaite, Near Newby Bridge, Cumbria LA12 - England, UK
|
| Finsthwaite Tower is situated between the small village of Finsthwaite and the slightly larger Newby Bridge. The tower was built to honour the officers, seamen and marines of the Royal Navy who defeated the fleets of France, Spain and Holland in 1799. Now that the area is heavily wooded, it is easy to miss even though a path passes quite close by, and it also sadly been neglected of late. Presumably it could be seen from quite a distance when it was originally constructed as it is located at the top of a hill. |
